THE BEGINNING

In Vendôme, painter Charles Portel introduces Jean Gourmelin to the techniques of wallpaper design, wood engraving and stencil drawing. At first he simply carries out orders, but he soon becomes a designer for Nobilis, a wallpaper and fabric manufacturer, and gains some fame in this line of work. Three of his creations, Ascott, The Sylphids and A Party at Thérèse’s are presented today at the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts.
