This Dutch artist is famous for exploring the infinite and creating impossible objects. In the 1963 Christmas issue of Caractère, Maximilien Vox places Gourmelin and Escher side by side: in their drawings, they both express the idea of an absurd opposition, the impossible implementation of a paradox; but while Escher’s work lies within the scope of pure, logical formalism, Gourmelin’s is in a living, dynamic paradox. His characters are always powerless as they face philosophical principles that become perilous.
