Jean Gourmelin’s meeting with writer Jacques Sternberg is decisive for his career as a designer, and the beginning of a lasting friendship. Jacques Sternberg, an art, humour and science-fiction lover, encourages Jean Gourmelin to allow his drawings to be guided ‘not by aesthetics, but by an idea’. He publishes many of his drawings in various anthologies and commissions illustrations for his columns in France Soir in 1968.
