To glance at a drawing by Jean Gourmelin is to set off on a journey into the unusual and the fantastic. You must let yourself be carried away by his images, which Philippe Soupault defined as ‘spells’, and become bewitched by his stroke or watercolour so delicately applied to paper. ‘You don’t emerge from a drawing by Jean Gourmelin unscathed’ Pierre Cabanne wrote. ‘But emerge you must, so powerful are his images, they enter our subconscious and remain engraved on our memory forever.’
