J. Gourmelin’s Worlds

Drawings

The worlds Jean Gourmelin creates are both made of stone and lightness – the stone from which his characters are formed and the lightness of the fantastic universes they move in.

Men and women, eternally suspended in a space where time has stopped, whose superficial fragility astonishingly resembles our own.

Their surface fragility looks astonishingly like ours.

Jean Gourmelin, 88, has never ceased to draw. His drawings have been exhibited in many art galleries, numerous books as well as reviews and magazines, like Bizarre, Planète, Plexus, Hara-Kiri, Pilote, Elle, Le Monde diplomatique, Le Figaro and Le Point.

This book assembles the works displayed during the exhibition devoted to Jean Gourmelin and organized by the Public Reference Library of Centre Pompidou from 19 June to 30 September 2008.
