CONFERENCE ON
NEWSPAPER DESIGN

What does the future hold for the press cartoon?

Conference and round table organized in the context of the exhibition « Jean Gourmelin’s Worlds » Friday 26 September 2008.

The newspaper cartoon, an authentic expression of freedom of speech, today must face the rationalization and marketing of editorial and advertising space. It is also subject to the tumultuous developments of the press, presently undergoing economic and technological upheaval.

What space will these changes leave for this type of image, often irreverent, occasionally disturbing, so greatly appreciated by readers, which offers such a distinctive meaning and vision of the news? How is it possible to nourish that independence of mind, and the arts of the pen stroke and narrative, when economic or political contingencies may cause editors to be cautious? How far can insolence go ?

That event was filmed and recorded, you can watch it on the Bpi’s sound archives database.
